INFO
The Austrian designer Joseph Binder has had a decisive influence on the practical design in Europe and the United States by his minimal style. In his work, he knew how to connect colors and shapes in a skillful way and incorporated the effect on the observer into the design. To honor him, the international designing competition JBA was brought to life in 1996.
“Shapes and colors are inseparable”
This quotation from the designer became the guideline for the competition in the year 2018. Joseph Binder played with images and letters, illustrations and typography, which partially overlapped in their function and therefore took over the part of the other. Thus, typography became illustration and illustration suddenly spoke volumes.
This intentional combination of the elements was significant for the new image (appearance) of the competition. The basic shapes could be reassembled modularly into new compositions, colors were deployed in a striking way and the font became an important part of the overall picture. Today, as then, this contrasting use of shapes and colors has an extreme topicality.
